Green Movie Night - Food Justice and Forest Gardening

Food Justice is a documentary about the food justice movement, made by Martina Brimmer and Zora Tucker in 2006. The first-time film makers set out to tell the story of unequal access to food in our minority communities as a symptom of environmental racism and classism. The extraordinary vision of various organizations in West Oakland and San Francisco brings to light the spirit of the food justice movement. Striving to cultivate justice in their neighborhoods and nourish their communities groups such as Oakland Based Urban Gardens, People's Grocery, Mandela's Market and the volunteers of the Alemany Farm are confronting social, agricultural and environmental issues that affect us all.

UAS Events Team Meeting (First Tuesday of the Month) @ New College

The Urban Alliance for Sustainability events team is now meeting the 1st Tuesday of every month to coordinate the next exciting opportunites we have coming to us, which include Greenfestival Nov. 9-11th, a fun social gathering and volunteer orientation, a possible Community Dialogues event in Oct. and the monthly green movie nights, as well as other possible collaborations with getting the community together! These meetings will be short, conscise, and FUN! Please feel free to bring some food to share and ideas. Many hands make light work, and it creates a better time.

Imagine you are walking down the streets of San Francisco when suddenly you hear these words at about the same instant that the tantalizing smell of warm food fills your nostrils. You might not believe it; you might actually continue to walk down the street with not so much as a glance. A large part of the population either chooses not to believe it, or determines food scary and unworthy upon hearing the word free attached with it if it is being served street side. But maybe, just maybe, you pause, and the captivating chef spinning magic with a soup ladle spots the hesitation in your stride.

Berkeley Farm Bill Discussion Dishes up Food Democracy

Last month another Cook the Vote dinner was served at a Berkeley residence much to the delight and edification of the diners. The topic was not about presidential candidates but the critically important "Farm Bill" that will pass through our congress this year. The conversation at the table focused on the seeds of change that will turn the Farm Bill from legislation that hands massive subsidies to agribusiness into policy that will shape a sustainable food system.
